This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler, giving you more space for your other desktop items.
Powerful storage device with a sleek new design. |
Takes up less room on your desk than a stapler. |
Keep all your digital content in a safe and secure location. | Portable Performance and Security If you're still relying on your personal computer or back-up CDs or DVDs to store your digital content or vital personal or family documents, you're running an unnecessary risk. Your computer can only hold so many files and can crash at any time, leaving you helpless to access your content. DVDs and CDs have a place in archiving, but they get easily scratched and lost. It's too risky to store everything in your computer, and too time-consuming and cumbersome to have a drawer full of CDs or DVDs. Computers come and go, but your content should always be nearby. With up to 1000 glorious gigabytes, the Free Agent external hard drive is the best place to gather and access all of your important photos, movies, music, games and documents. Simply plug in the power and the USB cable and you're ready to go. The Seagate Free Agent is big enough to store a huge portion of your digital content in a safe and secure environment, but small enough to let you take that content with you wherever you go. In other words, having the Seagate Free Agent is like having your entire computer with you at all times, but in a package that's a small fraction of the space and weight of your computer. Designed to live peacefully in your home or office, the Free Agent external hard drive is extra quiet and takes up less room on your desk than a stapler. Even the cable ports are base-mounted to help keep your desk free of clutter. We even add a little bit of sophistication to your desktop with the unique espresso brown finish and molten amber illumination. The sleek and slim design of this hard drive--only measures 7.5 x 1.6 x 6.4-inches (H x D x W)--and a weight of less than four pounds. The Seagate Free Agent lets you transfer files seamlessly from your computer via its USB 2.0 connection at a brisk transfer rate of up to 480Mb/sec. The drive delivers a spindle speed of 7,200 RPM, giving you the high-speed performance you need to back your data up quickly and safely. The Seagate Free Agent is ready to use out of the box with a PC, but it can be made Mac-ready in a matter of minutes with Mac OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is already compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. At this compact size, and with this high performance, you now have the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, so your digital content finally has room to breathe. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. What's in the Box FreeAgent Desktop drive, USB 2.0 cable, AC power adapter, and quick start guide.

Great, fast, quiet, perfect! August 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been using this Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive for over a year now and I really have to say it's an excellent system. I've used it on both XP and Vista without any problems at all. It is very quiet compared with my other external hard drive. This Seagate hasn't had any sorts of issues at all and is always instantly acessible.
Compare that great performance with my new OneTouch drive. Even though the OneTouch is "newer" it randomly appears and disappears, sounds like a lawnmower sometimes and is just a pain to use.
Sometimes you don't appreciate how well something works until you get a new model which is really hard to deal with. The more I try other external drives, the more I really appreciate the Seagate FreeAgent and how smoothly it installs and operates.
A note for those who don't understand how computer memory works. When they say this drive is 320 gig they mean the actual disk storage space is 320,070,287,360 actual bytes. If you remember back in basic computer school, a "K" is 1024 bytes. It s NOT 1000 bytes!! So therefore the capacity measured in strict K is 298 GB. This is NOT because of OS loss - it is because of the way you count bytes and bits. I really wouldn't obsess about that 20 gig and the 2 large pictures you might have stored in that space. The 320 gig is quite ample for me to hold the video files I work with in a given month.
Well recommended!

This is the first external hard drive I've ever had problems with, mostly because it lacks an on/off switch and tends to overheat. It depends on power from the USB port on your computer to shut it down and start it up. What this means is that it doesn't always shut down properly then, when you reboot your computer, it hangs the whole system.
Novice to Hard Drives February 22, 2008 I am a novice when it comes to external hard drives - I researched and read many reviews -the complexity of some of the discussions concerned me - all I wanted was to protect the data on my home system. I had a crash last year that nearly cost me all of my data and after that I decided to do multiple things to protect my work. I bought this and also a RW DVD to have data stored on site with this drive and on disk off site. I was very pleased with this drive. I've had it almost 6 months now. It was easy to set up and support was very good, well, after I reached someone who I could understand. The only thing I have had any concern over is turning the drive on and off. I rub, hold, pray, press and wait each time. It is just a mystery to me - think it could be because I am blonde?
Good product so far... February 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's true that about 20GB of space is taken up right out of the box, which is kind of ridiculous, but if I really needed more space, I would have bought the 500 or 750GB. The hard drive is easily accessible and transfers data quickly via USB2. The unit is very quiet and took no time at all to set up. So far I've been happy with the Seagate320GB and am glad that I chose it.
What a disappointment! February 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This thing will not work with Vista Backup, Windows Live OneCare Backup or Migo Backup and, who knows what else it won't work with. The Seagate site has a host of backup software it won't work with. It will backup with Seagate software but today my other computer crashed and I thought, no problem, I'll just restore to this computer. I downloaded the software, hooked up the FreeAgent and was amazed that a Restore feature does not show up on a computer other than the one originally backed up. Clever, Seagate!
